VP OF CIVIL ENGINEERING EXECUTIVE SEARCH
Retained search for the leader who runs your civil business
Alexander Executive Search runs VP of civil engineering executive search for civil engineering firms and heavy civil contractors across the U.S. In particular, we recruit VPs of Civil Engineering, VPs of Civil Construction and regional vice presidents for transportation, water and wastewater, land development, structural and site work businesses.
Equally, we work with firms of every size, from national contractors and multi-office consultancies to growing regional firms, and we run a dedicated process for growing firms. This work is part of our civil engineering executive search practice. For project-level leaders, see our civil engineering project manager executive search page.
What a VP of Civil Engineering does
A VP of Civil Engineering runs a business unit, a region or the whole civil practice. In most firms, the role owns a P&L, sets the bid strategy and decides which work the company goes after. It also leads the project executives and department managers who deliver that work.
For example, at a heavy civil contractor, the VP often links estimating, operations and the field, with accountability for safety, schedule and margin on every job. At a design firm, by contrast, the title usually means growing a practice by winning agency clients and building teams.
In either case, the role sits where technical judgment meets commercial risk. That is why we define the scope, revenue and reporting lines before we search, rather than starting from a job title.
Demand for these leaders is also rising. BLS projects employment of civil engineers to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 22,700 openings a year (BLS). Meanwhile, ASCE’s 2025 Report Card gave U.S. infrastructure a C and points to a $3.6 trillion investment gap over the next ten years (ASCE). As a result, proven civil VPs are scarce, and most are not looking.

WHAT TO ASSESS
What to assess in a VP of Civil Engineering
A strong resume shows where a candidate has been. However, these four areas show whether they can run your civil business.
COMMON MISTAKES
Common VP of Civil Engineering hiring mistakes
In our experience, failed civil VP hires usually trace back to one of three early decisions.
PAY
What a VP of Civil Engineering earns
These are the heavy civil contractor pay bands from our 2027 Engineering Leadership Salary Report. Specifically, they reflect our 2026 searches with established heavy civil contractors.
For regional executives, our search data shows total pay including bonus of $250,000 to $400,000 for top-performing regional vice presidents managing major portfolios. However, these are AES figures, not government data, and BLS does not publish pay by job title. The report therefore also shows the closest BLS benchmark. In practice, every package depends on scope, revenue and region. To see what a wrong hire costs, try our mis-hire cost calculator.
OUR PROCESS
How our VP of civil engineering executive search works
Because the search is retained, your appointment gets a dedicated team, clear milestones and a process built on evidence. Comparing firms? See our guide to the top engineering executive search firms in the USA.

RoleDNA™ Mapping: evidence before the first interview
Every shortlisted candidate goes through RoleDNA™ Mapping, which covers eight levels, so you can compare civil VPs fairly before you meet them:
- Job Location Mapping
- Executive Summary
- Professional Photo
- Candidate Introduction
- Key Competency Responses
- Behavioral Assessment
- Verified References
- Detailed Resume
For example, the Candidate Introduction is a short video, so you can see how each leader would come across to your board and agency clients. In addition, the Behavioral Assessment uses the McQuaig Word Survey, matched to the role profile from the McQuaig Job Survey.
Results are then scored against the success profile for your role and shared in a 24/7 online client dashboard. Learn more about RoleDNA™ Mapping.
PE license and reference checks
In particular, for civil VP roles we confirm each candidate’s PE license, the states it covers and its status before shortlisting. If your work crosses state lines, we also flag early whether a candidate would need licensure in another state.
We also take references from former bosses, project directors, clients and people who worked for the candidate. That way, we can check delivery claims, commercial results, safety records and how well they kept their teams.

Our work does not stop at the signed offer, either. We support negotiation and the notice period, and we stay involved through onboarding and the first critical months.
