Structural Engineering Executive Search

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING EXECUTIVE SEARCH

Executive search for U.S. structural engineering firms

Alexander Executive Search runs structural engineering executive search for consultancies, architecture and engineering firms and contractors across the United States, with a focus on the East Coast. We find and assess the principals and practice leaders who protect design quality, manage liability and grow profitable teams.

Structural practices depend on a small number of people who can lead licensed teams, earn the trust of architects, owners and contractors, and keep quality high under deadline pressure. However, those leaders are rarely looking. Our retained search reaches them directly, and RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping shows how each candidate is likely to perform before you meet them. This work is also part of our wider civil engineering executive search practice.

Why structural engineering leadership hires are difficult

Structural leaders carry real liability. They oversee sealed design for buildings, bridges and industrial structures, so a weak quality culture can expose the whole firm.

Licensing adds complexity. Senior structural roles need a PE license, and some states regulate structural engineering separately, with an SE license required for certain significant structures. As a result, the pool of qualified leaders in a given state can be small.

The best structural principals are also closely tied to their clients and teams. Because of that, they will only consider a move that offers more influence, a stronger platform or the chance to build a practice.

ROLES WE PLACE

Structural engineering leadership roles we search for

We recruit senior structural roles paid $150K and above. Each search is also shaped around the type of structures, the clients and the licensure the work needs. Overall, most searches fall into four groups.

  • Office leaders with P&L responsibility

Practice and technical leadership

  • Chief structural engineers

Quality and delivery leadership

  • QA/QC and technical directors
  • Project principals and engineers of record

Structural consultancies

Specialist firms that design buildings, bridges and industrial structures for owners, architects and contractors.

Contractors and specialty firms

Design-build contractors, fabricators and specialty firms that need structural leaders on the delivery side.

Shortlist and close

You review two to four scored candidates. Then we manage references, offer and onboarding.

RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping: 8 levels of assessment

Every shortlisted candidate is assessed across the same 8 levels, so you can compare structural leaders fairly before the first interview:

  1. Job Location Mapping
  2. Executive Summary
  3. Professional Photo
  4. Candidate Introduction
  5. Key Competency Responses
  6. Behavioral Assessment
  7. Verified References
  8. Detailed Resume

The Candidate Introduction is a short video, so you can see how each leader communicates. The Behavioral Assessment also uses the McQuaig Word Survey, matched to the role profile from the McQuaig Job Survey.

Results are then scored against the success profile for your role and shared in a 24/7 online client dashboard. Learn more about RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping.

PE license verification

Senior structural roles need a Professional Engineer license, and licenses are issued by individual state boards (source: NCEES). Some states also require a separate Structural Engineer (SE) license for certain structures. We confirm each candidate’s PE license, and the SE license where relevant, with the issuing board before shortlisting.

A free replacement guarantee and proven retention

Every placement comes with a 12-month free replacement guarantee as standard, extended to 2 years for senior roles. If the person leaves within the guarantee period, we find a replacement free of charge, subject to the agreed terms of engagement. How our guarantee works.

In one engagement, a growing U.S. engineering firm needed 10 appointments over two years. Before working with us, about 70% of its new hires stayed for 12 months. In contrast, all 10 leaders we appointed were still with the business after their first 12 months. Read the case study.

Firms of every size

We work with structural firms of every size, from national firms to growing regional businesses. In a smaller firm, however, one senior hire can change the direction of the business. That is why we also run a dedicated executive search process for engineering firms under $120M, with the same research, assessment and guarantee.
