ENGINEERING EXECUTIVE SEARCH MIAMI

Miami engineering and civil engineering executive search from our Brickell headquarters

Alexander Executive Search runs engineering executive search in Miami from our headquarters at 1221 Brickell Ave, Suite 900, Miami, FL 33131. We recruit senior engineering and civil engineering leaders for consultancies, contractors, developers and owner-side teams across Miami-Dade and South Florida, for roles paying $150K and above.

Because Miami is our home market, we know the agencies, programs and firms that shape it. We also work with firms of every size, from national and international firms with Miami offices to growing regional practices. This work is part of our wider civil engineering executive search practice and our Florida executive search team.

What is driving engineering executive search in Miami

Miami-Dade is investing in highways, transit, aviation and water at the same time. As a result, consultants, contractors and public owners are often competing for the same small group of experienced leaders, sometimes for overlapping programs.

Water and resilience work is a major driver. For example, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department is delivering the state-mandated Ocean Outfall Legislation program to end routine ocean discharge of treated wastewater and expand reuse (Miami-Dade WASD). Programs like this therefore need leaders who combine treatment, conveyance and regulatory experience.

The talent pool is tight across the state, too. Florida had about 23,750 civil engineers in May 2025, the third-highest total of any state after California and Texas, and about 6,850 of them worked in the Miami metro (BLS OEWS). Nationally, BLS projects civil engineering employment to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, with about 22,700 openings a year (BLS).

Delivery models also shape the role. Several of the largest projects in the county are design-build, so leaders who have run pursuits, managed joint-venture partners and protected margin through construction are in short supply.

LOCAL PROGRAMS

Programs shaping Miami’s engineering market

Together, these public programs create steady demand for senior engineering leaders. In each case, the figures come from the agencies named, not from AES.

I-395/S.R. 836/I-95 design-build

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency are building this $866 million project, including a new signature bridge over Biscayne Boulevard. FDOT lists estimated completion as December 2029 (FDOT).

Miami International Airport

The airport’s $14 billion Modernization in Action program includes redeveloping the Central Terminal and adding a new Concourse K. The airport is planning for more than 77 million travelers a year by 2040 (MIA).

SMART Program and Metro Express

Miami-Dade’s first bus rapid transit line opened on October 27, 2025. It runs 20 miles along US-1 from Florida City to Dadeland South and was developed as part of the county’s SMART Program (Miami-Dade County).

Ocean Outfall program

The Water and Sewer Department, which serves nearly 2.4 million residents, is upgrading treatment and expanding reuse to meet the state’s Ocean Outfall Legislation (Miami-Dade WASD).

RoleDNA™ Mapping: 8 levels of assessment

Every shortlisted candidate is assessed across the same 8 levels, so you can compare Miami engineering leaders fairly before the first interview:

  1. Job Location Mapping
  2. Executive Summary
  3. Professional Photo
  4. Candidate Introduction
  5. Key Competency Responses
  6. Behavioral Assessment
  7. Verified References
  8. Detailed Resume

For example, the Candidate Introduction is a short video, so you can see how each leader communicates. In addition, the Behavioral Assessment uses the McQuaig Word Survey, matched to the role profile from the McQuaig Job Survey.

Results are then scored against the success profile for your role and shared in a 24/7 online client dashboard. Learn more about RoleDNA™ Mapping.

Florida PE license checks

Many senior roles in Miami need a Florida Professional Engineer license, which is issued by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers. We confirm each candidate’s license and its status before shortlisting. We also flag early when a leader licensed in another state will need Florida licensure (see NCEES).

A free replacement guarantee and proven retention

Every placement also comes with a 12-month free replacement guarantee as standard, extended to 2 years for senior roles. If the person leaves within the guarantee period, we find a replacement free of charge, subject to the agreed terms of engagement. How our guarantee works.

In one engagement, a growing U.S. engineering firm needed 10 appointments over two years. Before working with us, about 70% of its new hires stayed for 12 months. In contrast, all 10 leaders we appointed were still with the business after their first 12 months. Read the case study.

Firms of every size

We work with engineering firms of every size, from national and international firms to growing regional businesses. In a smaller firm, however, one senior hire can change the direction of the business. That is why we also run a dedicated executive search process for engineering firms under $120M, with the same research, assessment and guarantee.

Engineering executive search Miami: FAQs

Where is your Miami office?

Our headquarters is at 1221 Brickell Ave, Suite 900, Miami, FL 33131, in the Brickell financial district.

What do senior engineering leaders earn in Miami?

Pay depends on the role, but federal data gives useful context. In the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro, the median annual wage for architectural and engineering managers was $167,160, and the 90th percentile was $239,990. For civil engineers, the median was $83,750 (BLS OEWS May 2025, Miami metro). However, these figures cover all employers and exclude most bonuses.

What local experience do you look for in Miami candidates?

It depends on the role, but for many Miami searches we look for coastal resilience, stormwater and sea-level rise experience, a track record with the South Florida Water Management District and local permitting, and the ability to value-engineer early, before change orders erode margin. We assess these alongside the behavioral and competency scoring in RoleDNA™ Mapping.

Do you verify Florida PE licenses?

Yes. We confirm each candidate’s license and its status with the Florida Board of Professional Engineers before shortlisting, and we flag early when out-of-state leaders will need Florida licensure.

Can you recruit leaders from outside South Florida?

Yes. Miami’s pool of senior engineering leaders is heavily contested, so we also map and approach leaders across the U.S. and internationally. We help with the usual friction points of hiring from outside the region, including experience of different regulatory regimes, compensation expectations and family relocation.

Do you work with smaller engineering firms?

Yes. We work with engineering firms of every size, and growing firms under $120M can also use our dedicated executive search process.

What happens if a placement leaves?

If the person leaves within the guarantee period, we find a replacement free of charge, subject to the agreed terms of engagement. Specifically, the guarantee runs for 12 months as standard and is extended to 2 years for senior roles.
