Civil Engineering Executive Search in Ohio

OHIO CIVIL ENGINEERING EXECUTIVE SEARCH

Executive search for Ohio engineering and infrastructure firms

Ohio is a major engineering, manufacturing, infrastructure and construction market. Alexander Executive Search provides civil engineering executive search in Ohio, helping specialist firms find senior civil engineering and technical leaders who can deliver complex work, strengthen teams and build lasting client confidence. Ohio searches follow the same process as our national civil engineering executive search practice.

Ohio’s engineering and infrastructure market

Ohio combines large public works programs with private investment in advanced manufacturing, energy, water, transportation and industrial development. Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati each have a different project mix, employer base and leadership market. A successful appointment therefore requires more than a search for someone with the right job title. It requires a clear understanding of the work, the stakeholders and the outcomes the new leader must deliver.

Why senior Ohio hires are difficult

Engineering and construction businesses often need a leader who can be credible with technical professionals, owners, public agencies, contractors and customers at the same time. The strongest candidate may be succeeding in a role already, which means the opportunity will not be found through an active applicant pool. A resume can show projects and titles, but it rarely explains how a leader handled a difficult handover, recovered a troubled program, developed a successor or built trust after a safety or quality issue.

Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati are different markets

Location also matters. Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati connect to different clients, transportation systems, industrial bases and labor markets. A leader who fits one environment may not have the relationships, pace or operating style required in another. Our search therefore tests the context behind each achievement, not just the achievement itself.

OHIO PROJECTS

Ohio project context

Ohio’s leadership requirements are visible in the projects now shaping the state.

Columbus: I-270/I-71 interchange

In Columbus, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s I-270/I-71 Interchange Improvements project has an estimated construction cost of $41.43 million and a schedule running from summer 2025 to fall 2027. The work creates demand for leaders who can coordinate bridge preservation, roadway safety, public involvement and delivery risk.

Columbus water capacity

Columbus is also investing in water capacity and resilience. The City’s Water Facility Capital Improvement Projects page describes the Home Road Water Plant, designed to support Central Ohio growth and targeted to come online in late 2032, alongside upgrades to existing treatment plants, controls and water-supply assets. These programs require engineering, construction, commissioning, operations and environmental leadership.

Intel in New Albany

The industrial story is equally significant. Intel’s official Ohio page says its New Albany, Licking County site spans nearly 1,000 acres and is planned to support two leading-edge chip factories, with more than $28 billion in planned investment. Large advanced-manufacturing programs need leaders who can manage interfaces between owners, designers, contractors, suppliers, utilities, commissioning teams and local stakeholders.

Cleveland and Cincinnati

Cleveland-area water and resilience work creates another set of leadership challenges. The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s Riverview Road project in Brecksville is raising the road, increasing stormwater conveyance and replacing undersized crossings to reduce flooding. Cincinnati Metro is developing Metro Rapid, a bus rapid transit system for the Reading Road and Hamilton Avenue corridors, with planned launches in late 2027 and 2028. These are different project types, but each depends on leaders who can turn technical plans into safe, coordinated delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Which Ohio markets do you cover?

We support searches across Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and the wider Ohio market, including roles connected to national programs or multi-site operations.

Do you recruit only from Ohio?

No. We map Ohio first, then extend into adjacent engineering, infrastructure, industrial and energy markets when the capability transfers. The search is built around the outcomes of the role, not a narrow geographic label.

Can you run a confidential succession search?

Yes. Retained search is well suited to confidential replacements, founder succession and leadership changes that cannot be advertised. We control the information shared with the market and approach candidates directly.

How we assess Ohio leadership candidates

What roles are most often difficult to fill?

Senior engineering, project, operations, construction, HSE and regional leadership roles are difficult when the business needs technical depth plus the ability to lead clients, teams and delivery risk.

How do you assess a senior engineering candidate?

We test the evidence behind project scope, decision-making, team leadership, safety and stakeholder outcomes. RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping helps define the profile before interviews and references deepen the assessment.
