Managing Director Executive Search for Engineering Firms

MANAGING DIRECTOR EXECUTIVE SEARCH

The person who runs the business when you’re not in the room

Our managing director executive search covers engineering and civil engineering firms: consultancies, contractors, manufacturers and the U.S. businesses of international groups. Sometimes a founder is stepping back. Sometimes a new office or subsidiary needs its own leader. Either way, you need someone who can take full responsibility for the business.

We work with firms of every size. These are roles paying $150K and up, so every search is retained and run by a dedicated team. See our For Clients page for how a recruitment engagement works.

What a managing director does in engineering and civil engineering

The title means different things in different firms. In many internationally owned companies, the managing director is the top executive for a business or a country. In a U.S. consultancy, it may be the leader of a regional office or an operating company inside a larger group. In a smaller firm, the MD is often the owner’s successor in all but name.

What stays the same is the scope. A managing director owns the P&L, the clients, the people and the reputation. In a design firm, that means winning work from agencies and private clients and keeping utilization healthy. At a contractor, it means bidding the right jobs, protecting margin and keeping people safe on site.

Before we search, we pin down exactly what your MD will own and who they will answer to.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

What we look for in a managing director

Plenty of people have run a department. Far fewer have run a whole business. These are the areas we test.

Whole-business ownership

We want candidates who have answered for revenue, margin, cash and headcount at the same time, not just one of them. We ask what they changed in their first year and what it did to the numbers.

Client relationships

In engineering, clients buy people. We look at which relationships a candidate built personally and which came with the firm, because that tells you what they will bring to yours.

Shaping a team

An MD inherits a team and then has to shape it. We look for leaders who have hired well, dealt with underperformance and grown their own successors.

Working with owners

Many MDs report to founders, partners or a parent company. We check how candidates have handled that relationship, especially when they disagreed.

How RoleDNA™ Mapping tests an MD for your business

A managing director can look perfect on paper and still be wrong for your culture. RoleDNA™ Mapping, our own assessment process, is built to catch that. We start by agreeing a success profile with you, then measure each shortlisted candidate against it.

The Key Competency Responses show, in the candidate’s own words, how they would handle real situations in your business. The Behavioral Assessment shows whether their natural style suits a turnaround, a steady growth plan or a founder handover. Add verified references and a short introduction video, and you can compare candidates side by side in the online client dashboard. Learn how RoleDNA™ Mapping works.

Managing director recruitment: FAQs

What is the difference between a managing director and a CEO?

In a large group, the CEO runs the whole company and managing directors run its businesses or regions. In a smaller firm, the two titles can mean the same job. We go by the scope of the role, not the title on the business card.

Should we promote from within or search outside?

If you have a strong internal candidate, we can assess them alongside outside candidates using the same process. That gives you a fair comparison, and it gives your internal candidate a credible result either way.

Can you help when a founder is planning to step back?

Yes. Founder succession is a delicate search, and we treat it that way. We help you define what the next leader needs to do, which is rarely a copy of what the founder did.
