Land Development Engineering Executive Search

LAND DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE SEARCH

Executive search for U.S. land development and civil engineering firms

Alexander Executive Search runs land development executive search for civil engineering consultancies, developers and homebuilders across the United States, with a focus on the East Coast. We find and assess the leaders who win private-sector work, steer sites through entitlement and permitting, and grow profitable teams.

Land development practices depend on a small number of people who own client relationships, lead licensed teams and keep fees and utilization healthy. However, those leaders are rarely looking. Our retained search reaches them directly, and RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping shows how each candidate is likely to perform before you meet them. This work is also part of our wider civil engineering executive search practice.

Why land development leadership hires are difficult

Land development is a client-driven business. Developers and homebuilders return to people they trust to move a site from due diligence to approved plans quickly, so a leader’s relationships and reputation travel with them.

The work also needs a rare mix of skills: site design, grading, stormwater and utility design, a working knowledge of local zoning and permitting, and the commercial sense to price fees and manage staff utilization.

Finally, the market moves with interest rates and housing demand. Leaders who have grown a practice through both busy and slow years are valuable, and they are seldom on the open market. For that reason, the search has to reach people who are not looking.

Civil and land development consultancies

Firms that provide site design, entitlement support, permitting and construction-phase services.

Multidisciplinary firms

Engineering, planning and surveying firms that are building or expanding a land development practice.

Shortlist and close

You review two to four scored candidates. Then we manage references, offer and onboarding.

RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping: 8 levels of assessment

Every shortlisted candidate is assessed across the same 8 levels, so you can compare land development leaders fairly before the first interview:

  1. Job Location Mapping
  2. Executive Summary
  3. Professional Photo
  4. Candidate Introduction
  5. Key Competency Responses
  6. Behavioral Assessment
  7. Verified References
  8. Detailed Resume

The Candidate Introduction is a short video, so you can see how each leader communicates. The Behavioral Assessment also uses the McQuaig Word Survey, matched to the role profile from the McQuaig Job Survey.

Results are then scored against the success profile for your role and shared in a 24/7 online client dashboard. Learn more about RoleDNAâ„¢ Mapping.

PE license verification

Site, grading and utility plans submitted to local agencies usually need the seal of a licensed engineer, and licenses are issued by individual state boards (source: NCEES). We confirm each candidate’s Professional Engineer license and its status with the issuing board before shortlisting. We also flag early when a role will need licensure in another state.

A free replacement guarantee and proven retention

Every placement comes with a 12-month free replacement guarantee as standard, extended to 2 years for senior roles. If the person leaves within the guarantee period, we find a replacement free of charge, subject to the agreed terms of engagement. How our guarantee works.

In one engagement, a growing U.S. engineering firm needed 10 appointments over two years. Before working with us, about 70% of its new hires stayed for 12 months. In contrast, all 10 leaders we appointed were still with the business after their first 12 months. Read the case study.

Firms of every size

We work with land development firms of every size, from national firms to growing regional businesses. In a smaller firm, however, one senior hire can change the direction of the business. That is why we also run a dedicated executive search process for engineering firms under $120M, with the same research, assessment and guarantee.
