Technical Director Executive Search for Engineering Firms

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR EXECUTIVE SEARCH

The senior engineer everyone else checks their work with

Our technical director executive search covers technical directors, chief engineers and directors of engineering for engineering and civil engineering firms across the U.S. These are the people who set your technical standards and sign off on the work that carries your name.

We work with firms of every size, and we know a technical director at a 40-person structural practice does a very different job from one at a national design firm. See our For Clients page for how our recruitment process works.

What a technical director does

A technical director is the firm’s senior technical authority. They set design standards and QA/QC procedures, review high-risk work, solve the problems nobody else can and often act as engineer of record on major projects.

In civil engineering, that might mean owning the firm’s approach to bridge design, drainage or geotechnical work. In industrial or manufacturing engineering, it could mean product design standards, testing and failure investigation. Either way, they protect the firm from the kind of technical mistake that ends up in a claim.

Many technical directors also mentor the next generation of senior engineers. That part of the job is easy to overlook in a search, and it shouldn’t be.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

What we look for in a technical director

Technical depth is the starting point. These are the other things we test.

Verified credentials

Where your work needs a Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license, we check it against state board records. NCEES explains how licensure works.

Quality and risk

We ask candidates how they have set up QA/QC, handled design errors and dealt with a project that went wrong. Their answers say a lot about how they will protect your firm.

Teaching and influence

A technical director has to bring engineers with them, often without direct authority. We look for people who have raised the standard of a team, not just their own work.

Commercial awareness

The best technical directors know every standard has a cost. We look for leaders who can weigh quality against schedule and fee.

How RoleDNA™ Mapping assesses technical leaders

Technical candidates are often undersold by their resumes. RoleDNA™ Mapping, our own assessment process, gives them a better chance to show what they know, and gives you better evidence to judge them.

The Key Competency Responses ask candidates to work through technical and leadership situations specific to your firm. The Behavioral Assessment shows how they are likely to handle pushback from project managers or clients. With verified references, a short introduction video and a detailed resume, all scored against your role profile in an online client dashboard, you can compare candidates on evidence. Technical director recruitment: FAQs

Does a technical director need to be a licensed PE?

For most civil and structural firms that seal drawings, yes, and sometimes in more than one state. Many industrial and manufacturing firms don’t require it. We confirm what your role needs before the search starts.

Is a technical director a management role?

It depends on the firm. Some technical directors manage large teams. Others lead through expertise and have few direct reports. We define that with you, because it changes who succeeds.

Can you find specialists in niche disciplines?

Yes. We map the market for the discipline you need, including people who aren’t looking, and approach them confidentially.
