For nearly two decades, I’ve watched the Civil Engineering recruitment industry obsess over Resumes—pages of self-reported claims, buzzwords, and neatly formatted skills lists. But here’s the truth: Resumes are references, not revelations. They tell you what someone has done, but almost nothing about how they did it, why they succeeded, or whether they will succeed again in a completely new environment.

I started recruiting in 2005, and like most consultants at the time, I spent my early years firing résumés across inboxes, setting up interviews, and hoping the match would work. But “hope” is not a hiring strategy. I knew there had to be a better way—one that offered more certainty, deeper insight, and stronger outcomes.

That’s why we built (AES).
And it’s why our process is fundamentally different.

Hiring Shouldn’t Start With the Candidate—It Should Start With the Role

Most recruitment processes jump straight to reviewing Resumes. At AES, we start by understanding the role at a behavioural level—long before we ever meet a candidate.

Introducing The Job Survey®

The Job Survey® is our foundation. It’s an online tool that produces six detailed reports to clearly define the behavioural requirements of the role—not just the tasks or responsibilities, but the human traits needed to excel.

Why? Because:

  • People are hired on skills and experience
  • But they are fired on behaviour and performance

A job description will tell us what you want someone to do.
The Job Survey® tells us how you want them to do it.

By using this tool, we build an internal benchmark of the ideal behaviours, communication style, and performance tendencies that align with the role. It ensures everyone—from HR to hiring managers to executives—is aligned from the very beginning.

A Kick-Off Meeting with Purpose

Once the Job Survey® is complete, we bring the entire hiring team together for a structured kick-off meeting. This isn’t a quick briefing—it’s a deep exploration into:

  • Company culture
  • Team dynamics
  • Leadership expectations
  • Growth plans
  • The real challenges behind the role

From this, we create a custom candidate pack used to professionally represent your company and attract the right calibre of talent. It positions your brand clearly and compellingly, helping candidates understand not just the role—but the opportunity.

A Shortlist That Is More Than Names on a Page

At AES, the shortlist is where our difference becomes undeniable.

Rather than emails scattered across inboxes, we present candidates through a centralised online system. Everything is in one secure location, accessible to all decision-makers.

Each candidate profile includes:

  • A professional, up-to-date photograph
  • A personalised introduction video, highlighting key strengths
  • An executive summary based on in-person discussions
  • Competency-based questions and documented responses
  • Two verified employer references
  • An updated résumé
  • Full Behavioural Assessment Suite results
  • Documented career achievements and evidence of impact

By the time you meet a candidate, you already have a 360-degree view of who they are—how they work, how they lead, and how they behave under pressure.

There are no surprises.
No guesswork.
No “let’s just meet them and see.”

Why This Matters

In a world where talent decisions shape the future of organisations, hiring cannot be left to instinct or incomplete information. At AES, we don’t simply introduce candidates—we provide insight, clarity, and confidence.

Our approach reduces hiring risk, accelerates decision-making, and increases long-term success by ensuring every shortlisted individual aligns with both the behavioural DNA of the role and the strategic needs of your organisation.

Hiring will always be about people.
But successful hiring is about understanding people deeply.
That is what Alexander Executive Search does better.
